Veteran Perth photojournalist Nic Ellis left school in 1972 to begin a career in photography, at the age of 16, in his home town of Newport in Wales. He worked night shifts in the darkrooms at the Welsh national daily, the Western Mail in Cardiff, to gain a foothold in media, before completing a three-year apprenticeship in photojournalism.

In 1981 he migrated to Sydney and worked for the Manly Daily, then the Sydney Morning Herald, before moving to Perth in 1982.

This is a book of photography, journalism and history, 188 pictures and their accompanying stories, marking 50 years since Nic Ellis embarked upon a career in photography on leaving school in his home town of Newport in Wales, where he grew up. He arrived in Sydney, Australia, in 1982, working for the Manly Daily and the Sydney Morning Herald, before moving to Perth, where he has been 'on the road' as a newspaper photojournalist for 40 years. Accompanying text essays are written by journalist and author Brad Collis.
