Description

In 1963 Stephen Hawking was given a couple of years to live. In January 2017 he celebrates his seventy-fifth birthday. This biography of the brilliant theoretical physicist and inspirational international celebrity, written with the help of Hawking himself and his close associates, now includes: his leadership at the London Paralympic Games; the release of the film about his life The Theory of Everything; his BBC Reith Lectures in 2016; his continuing work on black holes, gravitational waves, the new discovery of "supertranslations"; the launch of the astounding "Starshot" programme; the first presentation of the Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication at Starmus III in June 2016. Written with the clarity and simplicity for which all Kitty Ferguson's books have been praised, it is a captivating account of an extraordinary life and mind.

Reviews

"Ferguson captures the very full life and work of one of the most vibrant minds of our time" Publishers Weekly "Fascinating" Observer "The reader is drawn on by some of the best scientific definitions, analogies, simple explanations and downright interesting writing I have ever seen" Evening Standard "Ferguson deftly conveys an exciting sense of both Stephen Hawking himself and his pre-eminent role in modern-day theoretical physics... A fine introduction to Hawking's own A Brief History of Time" Booklist "Fascinating... Ferguson's sympathetic and informed take on an individual who has enriched human knowledge against the odds, is an excellent summing up of [Hawking's] unique and creative contribution to both science and humanity" -- George Ellis Nature Magazine

Author description

Kitty Ferguson first became acquainted with Stephen Hawking and his family when she lived in Cambridge in the late 1980s. Around that time she retired from her career as a professional singer and conductor and began writing and lecturing about science and scientists for readers and audiences with little or no scientific background. Her seven books have appeared to critical acclaim all over the world. She and her husband now divide their time between Cambridge and South Carolina.
